Pesticides and untreated waste account for about 80% of marine pollution worldwide. This pollution leads to the destruction of certain ecosystems. There are currently 500 dead zones in the world, which in total represent the size of the United Kingdom! Marine life does not survive in these areas.
In addition, every day, ships dump oil into the sea, causing the death of birds, marine mammals, algae, fish and seashells.
Many people do not feel directly concerned, yet in addition to the environmental consequences, beaches close because of unsuitable water and waste.
On the other hand, the pollution also poisons our food because the fish swallow a lot of toxins. There are many food poisoning. The boats are damaged by plastic bags being caught in the propellers and the disappearance of some marine species can lead to a food crisis.
The ocean is a vital source of food, especially for the world's poorest people. This loss of biodiversity could lead to famine, increased poverty and conflict. The challenge is not only environmental but also social! We must learn to manage our oceans in a sustainable way.
By yourself, you can learn about a cause of environmental protection that is important to you and involve you. You all can do something. There are surely some cleaning operations near you, do not throw anything near the ribs, do not use fertilizer until it rains and don't put chemicals in the canalization: everything will end up in the ocean.
Simple things are sometimes the most effective. The most important thing is ambition!
